EatClub loves this humble umami-rich hot spot, and we’re sure you will too.
Sitting cute on Toorak Road, Japonica Japanese Restaurant is a small Japanese eatery. The space is simple, light and bright with a huge window facing the street. It makes for a great duck-in lunch spot or place to slow down, people watch and graze. On arrival, it’s a good idea to order the Gyoza, Edamame and the Nasu Hasami Age which is deep fried eggplant served with tempura dipping sauce. They also do a tempura in all sorts: fish, prawn and vegetables – all with perfect crisp batter.
No matter what ends up landing on your table though, make sure there are Tako Suzuke there too; it’s octopus marinated in sweet vinegar, served cold.
Main course could see you having Tori Katsu (grilled chicken), Sake Teriyaki (grilled salmon) or the Hotatte Niniki Yaki – a dish consisting of grilled scallops served with a light garlic-soy dressing. Soba and udon noodle dishes feature, as well as plenty of Donburi dishes. You could also get an assortment of sushi and sashimi when you order the Moriawase, teamed best with sake or that bottle of wine from home you’ve been itching to crack open. Japonica Japanese Restaurant is BYO!
