EatClub Welcomes a Maki-Mix to the platform – an eatery for the health-conscious on Chapel Street.
It’s as if poke bowls are having a moment in Melbourne, and Japanese food is having an especially exciting one also. Combine the two in one restaurant, and you’ve got an edamame-and-miso-rich menu that encourages vibrant, healthy eating. Maki-Mix in Prahran makes for a great duck-in lunch spot or a place to graze – enjoying crispy starters and nourishing bowls.Inside, it’s uncomplicated with black walls and a bunch of wooden tables. It’s a small no-fuss venue that looks out onto Chapel Street. On arrival, it’s a good idea to order the Lotus Chips, which are served with a side of maki-mayo – a thick umami-like mayonnaise. They also do a tempura twist on a retro favourite: a Prawn Cocktail. No matter what ends up landing on your table though, make sure there are Enoki Mushroom Fries somewhere on there too; they’re tempura-battered and served with their super tasty mayo.
There are seven poke bowls on the menu, and each generous serve is jammed with flavour and absolutely loaded with goodness. You can get your diced fish – such as tuna or Tasmanian salmon – as well as wagyu beef, peking duck and marinated tofu atop seasonal vegetables, grains, seaweed and edamame.
Beyond the poke bowls and starters, there aree also miso soups, bento boxes and the option to build-your-own bowl or sushi platter made up of nigiri sushi, maki and sashimi. While the venue is not licensed, there are hard-to-find Malaysian and Japanese sodas on offer.
