Sydney spot No. 5 Restaurant and Bar has evolved… and the locals love it.
Its concept is more refined: cocktails and dishes that reflect seasonality and locality. The decor? Well that’s just gorgeous. And dogs are welcome.
The name No. 5 Restaurant and Bar comes from having five owners and being number five on Alexandria’s McCauley Street. It’s somewhat a ‘hidden gem’ of a venue; it sits in an old semi-precious gem polishing factory and from the outside, it’s rather inconspicuous. An open roller door signifies that the restaurant and bar is open. The food menu is ‘Modern Australian’ with Asian influences and it’s incredibly cocktail-friendly. Bar manager James and head chef Emrys told EatClub that the kitchen and bar team work closely together, bouncing ideas off each other for their seasonal menus. The Beef Tartare with umami, enoki, yolk and nori is a mainstay of the menu but everything else changes. All items on the menu are made in-house; even the lavosh crackers that come with the cheese board are made from scratch. They pickle and ferment plenty of components of the dishes too. Order the House Pickles with dips with your first drinks. If you’re into yuzu, try the Rising Sun cocktail which is basically like a yuzu sour made with gin, Yuzushu, ginger and orange blossom. Life’s a Peach offers a fruity, floral and earthy fusion of flavours with elderflower liqueur, Dom Benedictine, peaches, thyme and bubbles.
